CHÂTEAU TRONQUOY-LALANDE, SAINT-ESTEPHE

A few months after acquiring Château Montrose, brothers Martin and Olivier Bouygues discovered its gem of a neighbor, Tronquoy-Lalande, and purchased the Saint-Estèphe château in 2006. The estate, which dates back to the 18th century, is reputed to have some of the finest terroirs in the heart of the appellation. By 2010, the Bouygues brothers invested over $10 million and completed their large-scale modernization program, including 22 temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats and an extensive barrel hall, to complement the historical property. Their commitment has without a doubt paid off, as the wines are drawing serious attention, especially with Hervé Berland, formerly of Mouton Rothschild and now at Montrose, overseeing production. Today we have the elegant 2014 vintage, a wine with a pedigree to develop beautifully over the next couple of decades.
Located on 30 hectares, the soil is comprised of a deep layer of gravel and clay with vineyards planted to Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. With a relatively high level of clay, Merlot flourishes here, with over 50% of the vineyards planted with the grape—distinguishing the property from its appellation neighbors where Cabernet Sauvignon dominates. Yet with the gravel ensuring great drainage, the grapes maintain amazing structure and complexity, giving the wine serious backbone. With the modern improvements to the winery, the wines are meticulously prepared from start to finish, spending 12 months in French oak.
Full of fresh aromas of dark fruit and licorice, the wine delivers with an abundance of flavors, including blackberries, cedar and spice. Full on the palate, the wine has fine, well integrated tannins, giving it more elegance and finesse. Densely layered and full of muscle, the 2014 will continue to develop and evolve, with further nuance becoming more prominent over time.
