2006 Lafite Rothschild

96 POINTS: The 2006 Lafite was among the favourites at our recent retrospective of the vintage. Surprisingly approachable, I found it incredibly aromatic on the initial attack, with lush notes of mulberry, currant, and spice. The texture is rich and dense, with supple tannins, a plump feel and an impressively long finish. 'A bit of baby fat', I wrote on the day - surprising, since it is 82% Cabernet Sauvignon. It must be severe sorting and strict selection - apparently, only 42% of the harvest made it into the grand vin. This wine will continue to improve almost indefinitely.
