SEÑA VALLE DE ACONCAGUA
CHILE 2021
WHY BUY: This is the 6th time in 11 years that James Suckling has awarded the path-breaking Viñedo Chadwick a perfect 100-point score (for its brilliantly-realized Seña Valle de Aconcagua 2021). We’re right there with him. It’s a devastatingly beautiful wine (and a phenomenal value besides, at $130 a bottle). Years ago Decanter anointed Viñedo Chadwick a "Wine Legend,” and how great is it to see that this titan of a winery not only refuses to sit on its laurels, but continues to burnish that legend.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING: James Suckling showered the Valle de Aconcagua with praise in his 100-point paean, singling out its "overwhelming” aromatics, "super-concentrated” intensity, and "incredible finesse." His verdict? It's already "dangerously delicious" and admits it "will be really hard to wait.” Writing about the Viñedo Chadwick 2020, he was nearly as smitten, praising its “deep nose” and "ultra-fine and polished” character, and luxuriating in its “classy and long” finish.
OUR TASTING NOTES: These are wines, above all, of impeccable balance — blending power, concentration, and density with elegance and finesse, and giving every indication of their great potential for long, graceful aging. The Seña 2021 delivers wave after gorgeous wave of dark fruit complexity, each sip revealing new stratas of flavor and texture while maintaining an almost supernatural composure. The Viñedo Chadwick 2020, meanwhile, showcases the kind of precision and purity that only comes when everything aligns perfectly: the right vineyard, the right year, the right hands guiding the process. Together, they demonstrate exactly why Chadwick has muscled its way into the conversation with the best of Bordeaux and Napa.
THE STORY: For many collectors, one name towers above all others when it comes to Chile: Seña, the path-breaking estate from legends Robert Mondavi and Eduardo Chadwick that almost single-handedly put an entire nation on the world stage. The pair spent four years in search of the ideal terroir before landing, fortuitously, on Chile's Valle de Aconcagua, in 1995. In the years since, Seña has established itself as a contemporary legend, with vintage after world-class vintage testifying to its founders' vision, passion, and abiding commitment to rigor and exactitude. The defining moment for Chadwick and Seña came in 2004, and an event right out of the famed "Judgment of Paris” in history-making significance, when, with the late Steven Spurrier looking on, a blind tasting pitting Viñedo Chadwick and Seña against Super-Tuscans (Sassicaia, Solaia, Tignanello) and Bordeaux first growths (Lafite, Latour, Margaux) saw the 2000 Viñedo Chadwick (in only its second vintage) emerging the winner, stunning everyone in attendance.
METHOD: When Robert Mondavi showed up in Chile in 1991, people thought he'd lost his mind. His idea? "I had the notion that we could make great wines equal to the greatest wines in the world, and everybody said it was impossible." Well, look who's laughing now. What makes these wines extraordinary isn't just ambition: it's Chadwick’s obsessive attention to terroir and technique. Seña emerges from 103 acres of volcanic soils in the Aconcagua Valley, cultivated biodynamically and crafted from a Bordeaux-inspired blend that shifts vintage by vintage. Viñedo Chadwick represents something even more focused: a single-vineyard expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, grown in perfect gravel soils at the foot of the Andes, with the kind of mineral concentration that no amount of tinkering in the cellar can produce.
WHAT TO PAIR THEM WITH: The Seña 2021's complex and intricate blend calls for an equally sophisticated cuisine: an herb-crusted rack of lamb, or a dry-aged ribeye with wild mushrooms. The Viñedo Chadwick 2020's is pure Cabernet, and calls for simple, classic preparations: a grilled porterhouse, a pot of braised short ribs, or a board of aged hard cheeses. Both wines have the structure and complexity to elevate special occasions.
FUN FACT: Before becoming a historic vineyard, the land at Puente Alto was a polo field. Eduardo Chadwick had to secure his father’s blessing to transform it.
OUR GUARANTEE: As always, we only buy and source directly from the estate, so rest assured – your wines will arrive in your hands with pristine provenance. Act now to fill your cellar with some of the most consummately-crafted, richly-rewarding New World wines you're going to come across.
