Pedesclaux begins with an elite pedigree: a Grand Cru Classe, founded in 1810, with 46 hectares of gravel and clay from one of the most prestigious regions of Bordeaux, as well as vines with an average age of 35 years old. But history and place are only part of the story with this estate, which has developed over the last decade into a Pauillac powerhouse, producing wines that compete with the upper echelon of Bordeaux - for a price that won’t break the bank. This beautifully balanced, perfectly aged expression of power and elegance is not only a rising star, but THE property to watch in Bordeaux. This development owes much to its current owner, Jacky Lorenzetti of Lilian Ladouys and Issan, and it goes to show that to make great wine even greater, it all starts with the vision at the top.

Jacky Lorenzetti’s vision indeed has breathed new life into the property. Acquired in 2009, one of Lorenzetti’s first moves was enlarging the vineyards with 12 hectares, located on the Milon plateau next to parcels owned by Lafite and Mouton Rothschild. The vineyard management is labor intensive in order to retain the highest quality of fruit, with everything done by hand: de-budding, de-leafing and crop thinning as well as harvesting into small crates. Laser optical sorting was introduced to more precisely select only the perfect bunches and by 2015, a complete renovation of the chateau was complete, including a redesign by renowned architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte.

Traditionally Pedesclaux is a blend with higher levels of Merlot, however the 2012 packs a punch with 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, giving it an intense color and deep, classic flavors of Pauillac. The clay soils provide power while the gravel fosters a beautiful elegance. The wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged in 70% new French oak for 15 months. The tannins are firm yet smooth and fine, with well-integrated oak balanced by dark, fresh fruit and flavors of cocoa and licorice. One of the “real sleepers from the vintage,” (AG) this is a wine that shouldn’t be passed up, especially with today’s offer that brings it to $33.97 a bottle!
