L'ENCANTADA, DOMAINE DEL CASSOU 2000, SINGLE CASK SELECTION, BAS-ARMAGNAC
When it comes to the small but mighty community of Armagnac collectors and connoisseurs, we can’t think of another name that creates buzz or hype quite like cult-favorite L’Encantada. Its reputation has created a stir, with treasure-hunters scouring retailers and auctions for ultra-rare, often decades-old releases.
Of late, L’Encantada, or “The Enchanted One,” is becoming a phenomenon even among the bourbon community. Why? For whiskey fans, there’s plenty of boxes that L’Encantada’s bottlings check: single casks, barrel-strength, unfiltered and unadulterated; and elaborate packaging, including wax-dipped necks and wooden hang tags listing the vintage year. Nicolas Palazzi, whose PM Spirits imports these sought after offerings, further elaborates by noting that L’Encantada Armagnacs offer “power, richness, and excitement for whiskey drinkers looking to explore.”
Working with Palazzi, we’ve been able to taste through a number of casks to secure one barrel from L’Encantada’s rotating stable of “barrel raw” collectibles: a 20 year old Armagnac from Domaine Del Cassou. Like previous offerings, a limited number of bottles are available—just over 300 in the entire world.
The Del Cassou estate (which means "oak" in local dialect) is located in Arthez-d'Armagnac, a village within the greater Bas-Armagnac appellation, and is one of only a handful of tiny properties that L’Encantada sources for their selections. Del Cassou's eaux-de-vies are made exclusively from the Baco grape, championed in Bas-Armagnac for its longevity and structure. Many of the estate's vines are more than 100 years old, planted by the current owner's grandfather right after the phylloxera crisis of the late 1800s.
This is a small-scale estate, and a traveling distiller makes a yearly visit to Del Cassou to distill the wine; each year yields a mere 3-5 casks. The Armagnacs produced by Del Cassou are noted for their remarkable purity and fruit-forward character on the nose and palate. The eaux-de-vie from the ancient Baco vines is the star here, and the two decade-long maturation in French oak complements without overpowering. The 2000 vintage is an elegant and complex selection, displaying fruity aromas on the nose complemented by a richness on the palate and a lingering finish—a rarified beauty that any aged spirit lover would savor and enjoy.
