FATTORIA LE PUPILLE

TUSCANY, ITALY 2020

We love Super Tuscans, but if we're going to move heaven and earth – or at least shake the supply chain – to secure an allocation, it takes more than just high-quality winemaking to spring us into action. We're looking, above all, for a sense of the land; for distinction, character, soul; for a bottle that could, truly, come from no other place in the world.

A wine like the 2020 Fattoria Le Pupille Saffredi.

In his 98-point rave, James Suckling singled it out for its "beautiful length and consistency" and its "subtle and refined character."

All of these qualities were on full and gorgeous display in our recent tasting, but what endeared us to this one was its structure, which suggests that it will age well and beautifully for many years, and its resonant aromatics – the delicate perfume of mint, sage, and thyme that summoned us to the Tuscan coast and anchored this for us with a powerful and undeniable sense of place.

As the very first Super Tuscan from southern Tuscany, Saffredi established the blueprint for what a Super Tuscan should be, and even after all these many years it's thrilling to see that founder Elisabetta Geppetti and her team are still working with such passion and precision. And still crafting a world-class wine that feels, all the same, personal and intimate, the product of a small and plucky band of enthusiasts.

We'd cellar it for a couple of years, confident that this will be the kind of graceful, fully-dimensional wine to dazzle at a client dinner or a relaxing meal with friends.

We're fortunate, also, to be able to bring you Fattoria le Pupille's entry-level wine, their 2019 Poggio Valente, made with 100% Sangiovese from high-elevation and mostly old-vine grapes.

Sangiovese is not typically grown on the Tuscan coast, but that only makes, we think, for a more intriguing wine, permitting us to see a familiar, cherished varietal not just in a new package, but even (and especially after a lingering glass) in a new light.

The Wine Advocate was also smitten. "Born in a happy vintage with a cool spring and a growing season that had plenty of underground water reserves to keep the vines hydrated well until the end of August," it wrote, "this is a full and generous wine with dark cherry and wild plum aromas that segue to tar, licorice and crushed slate."

At 95 points, and at a best price of less than $47 a bottle, the smart play is to think of this one not by the case, but by the cases, plural. It will surely reward you, and many times over, and is a wine that can play well in just about any context (though it will shine best alongside a roasted rack of lamb with mint and thyme or with a plate of pan-seared duck breasts).

Folks, we can extend special Concierge Family pricing on these super Super Tuscans for the next week only, but our allocations are limited, so hurry to secure these absolute keepers for your collection today!
