CAIAROSSA

TUSCANY, ITALY 2016

Off the Tuscan coast between the ancient cities of Volterra and Pisa lies Val di Cecina (the Cecina River Valley), an area where history seems to have collided. With Roman and Etruscan, medieval and Renaissance influences, you can almost feel the history reverberating through this stunningly beautiful place. The Val di Cecina is home to Caiarossa, acquired in 2004 by Eric Albada Jelgersma, owner of Bordeaux classified growths Château Giscours and Château du Terte. Jelgersma recognized the potential of the vineyards’ unique terroir; the name ‘Caiarossa’ is an homage to the soil here, characterized by the presence of jasper and rock intensely red in color. Lorenzo Pasquini recently joined the Caiarossa team and boasts experience in both Bordeaux and Argentina; he most recently managed winemaking at Château d’Yquem director Pierre Lurton’s esteemed Argentinian winery, Cheval des Andes. With such legacy behind these wines, it’s not surprising that recent vintages are garnering top acclaim and attracting connoisseur attention. Recently awarded 96 points from the Wine Advocate, the 2016 Caiarossa Toscana is savory and dense, displaying notes of dark cherry, leather, and spice that “pushes the limits of ripeness but remains safely within the realm of elegance” (Monica Larner, WA).

The winery produces a number of estate wines but calls its Caiarossa bottling “the purest expression of our vineyards.” A Super Tuscan style, the wine is a blend of seven grapes from the Podere Serra all’Olio vineyard: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Sangiovese, Petit Verdot, and Alicante, all hand harvested and vinified separately. The wine is aged and vinified in a combination of new and used oak as well as concrete tank, which adds a unique, supple textural component while preserving the purity of fruit. The 2016 Caiarossa is a bold wine but has a finesse that distinguishes it from the sea of powerful reds; it has a lot to offer now but will certainly reward those with a few years’ patience.

We’re fortunate to work with some of the best wines available today, including both renowned and up-and-coming producers, and Caiarossa is quickly becoming one of our favorites—the exceptional quality of the wines live up to the romance of the place and the character of the terroir. We’re thrilled to have secured a small allocation of this recently released vintage, but it will likely go quickly in light of the recent press and high scores, not to mention the 31% discount we’re offering to our Concierge customers for one week only. Fans of Italian wines: secure your bottles today!
